HOW CAN THERAPY HELP?
Ultimately, in a perfect world, therapy is about growth.
Unfortunately, most of us don’t live in a perfect world but one that has been hit by; trauma, problematic attachment and relationships, illness, disability, bereavement, redundancy, loss, alienation and isolation. Even when life is good, it can be full of stressors. Coping with such stressors without help can result in a stuckness that prevents growth. For many this stuckness becomes habitual and so familiar that we do not even realise when unhelpful ways of coping with life have become addictive.
It can often be our own best attempts at coping with what life throws at us that causes secondary damage that can become habitual and so embedded in our personalities that we do not notice that our own behaviours and thoughts - which were our best attempts at coping and ingeniously worked well initially - are now harmful. Harmful and addictive coping mechanisms can insideously creep into our lives and because they are so familiar we believe they are normal, acceptable and not maladaptive. It is not always easy, or possible even, to identify or accept that we have become addicted to substances or ways of behaving, thinking and feeling.
Counselling and Psychotherapy can help us examine, understand and change what is not working for us.
